Few pointers are listed below which will be helpful to you while shopping for the right plant pots:

1) Location: The factor which should be considered first and foremost is the location of your plant.

2) Drainage system: What should be the ideal number of drainage holes in the pot. What should be the size of drainage holes?

3) weight: What should be the weight of your pots/container.

Now let us consider the advantages and disadvantages of a few common selected plant pots:

First of all, we will discuss the pros and cons of Ceramic or Cement plant pots/ containers:

Ceramic pots are available in a variety of sizes shapes and colors. So they are often best suited for indoor plants and super cute succulents.

I know ceramic pot/container must already have you swooning over, but ceramic pots/containers also come with certain drawbacks. Eg. Ceramic pots/containers are a bit expensive compared to other pots. So they tend to put a little extra pressure on your pocket. Also, they don't have proper drainage holes. Lack of drainage holes can present with a problem: this does not allow roots and soil to breathe properly. This also leads to an additional problem: If you tend to overwater your plants frequently then you should avoid ceramic pots/containers. Lack of drainage holes often leads to waterlogging which again leads to root rot or fungal infestation. Ceramic pots also have a dual dilemma as they conduct heat so they often get either too hot or too cold. Both of these conditions are problematic for plants.

Plastic containers: One of the most widely used pot, plastic pots/containers come in every size shape and color you can name. There are many inherent benefits of using plastic pots/containers.

First and foremost being cheap. These are the cheapest ones from all the above-mentioned pots. So they go easy on your wallet.

Another point is that plastic pots/containers are lightweight compared to the cement or clay pots/containers. So you don't have to curse all the time when you have to move the plant container all by yourself. Plastic plant pots/containers are also recommended when you are setting up a terrace garden. Being lightweight, they do not put any extra pressure on your roof.

Now let's turn our attention to the disadvantages of using plastic plant pots/ containers: Being an artificial article, plant roots cannot breathe through the plastic walls. Also, they tend to get too hot in summer and too cold in the winter season. These temperature variations also affect the potting soil temperature.

Now let's move on to my favorite one: the terracotta or earthen pots.

Using an earthen pot or terracotta pots have several benefits.

Being all-natural they provide a perfect environment for roots. Terracotta pots have a very good aeration facility as a result plant roots can breathe easily. The terracotta pots/ containers also have an efficient drainage system. So is you tend to overwater your plants then terracotta pots are for you. They can effectively remove excess moisture from tiny holes. This system in turn reduces the chances of root rot. Bonus point is they also come in variety of cute little shapes.
