How-to-Save-Your-House-Plants-In-Summer-Season

If you are a container gardener like me, then you must have observed pot-bound roots of your plants during re-potting. House-Plant grown in containers or pots face a unique dilemma. They often grow in the sideways of the container instead of penetrating straight into the soil. As a result, when your container/pot receives direct sun during long summer days, chances are that roots of your plants are also getting double trouble. Besides getting direct sunlight, they might also be receiving heat from sharing the hot wall of the container/pot. To summaries, the heat received by the pot will also be transferred to the root system of your plant.

So here are some basic and practical tips for keeping your plants cool and smiling:

1] Keep'em closer: Placing plants together and creating groups according to their tending requirements can have immense benefits. Grouping plants together creates their own Mini-Biome (environment). Eg Grouping moisture-loving greens together can reduce the surrounding temperature by few degrees and provide moisture to every plant in the group via transpiration. This also means that a little less tending work for you in this heat:)

2) Keep a tub/ container filled with water nearby: Summer heat results in rapid water loss from house plants which may lead to dehydration. Using a tub/container filled with water generates moisture due to evaporation. This again creates an ecosystem similar to that of aquatic habitat. House-Plant can fulfill their water requirements through moisture intake via evaporated water.

3)Mulching:  Mulching reduces water loss from the potting soil/mixture. Also, they prevent the growth of weeds which may create additional water stress on the plant. Mulch eventually decomposes into organic nutrients.

4) Use the green net or utilize the shade of some large tree: This helps in avoiding direct sunlight. Hence you get healthy smiling leaves.

5) Make-shift Drip Irrigation System: Don't throw away milk jars, plastic bottles, or yogurt cups. Instead, utilize these idle lying items to create a makeshift Drip Irrigation System. Drill holes into the bottle and insert it in the soil. It should be near the roots of your house plant but take care that it does not damage the root system.
