Jade Plant is a succulent with cute little oval-shaped leaves. Being a forgiving and an undemanding succulent plant, Jade plant requires minimal care while rewarding you with a rich decor in your apartment or garden. Jade plant is also considered very lucky according to Feng-Shui, so it is often given as a gift article to friends, family, or well-wishers. So with this brief intro, let's get right into the tips on how to grow and care for the jade plant.

Potting Mix/Soil Mixture: Proper care should be taken while preparing the potting/soil mixture for the Jade Plant. Because you are as healthy as your roots are.

Jade plant, being a succulent love to grow in porous and well-drained soil. So it becomes imperative to prepare a well-drained soil mixture that can also fulfill all the nutritional requirements of the Jade Plant. For this, Take one-third normal garden soil, one third river sand, and one-third compost. Compost can be vermicompost or cow dung compost or leaf compost or compost prepared at home from kitchen scraps or any other compost of your liking and availability. You can adjust the above-mentioned components of the potting mixture depending upon the climate you reside in or your soil type. You can also mix bonemeal or antifungal powder to your potting/soil mixture for the added benefit. Just remember to keep keep the potting/soil mixture light and porous that way the roots of the succulent jade plant can breathe.

Water: Another crucial parameter determining the growth of the Jade Plant is WATER. Yup. Over watering the Jade Plant may lead to Root Rot or fungal infestation. While under watering may There are no fixed criteria for watering the JADE plant so the thumb rule of watering should be followed. Water your Jade Plant only when it is thirsty. Check the topsoil of the Jade pot. If it is dry then water it thoroughly that is till you see water percolating down the drainage hole. This will ensure that the roots which have penetrated deep in the soil also get the required amount of water. After all Happy Roots= Happy Plant.
Sunlight: Like every other succulent, the Jade plant also thrives in a semi-shade environment. Morning bright sunlight is very beneficial for the growth of the Jade plant. But direct sunlight should be avoided. The reason being, jade plants store water in its leaves. So with direct sunlight, this stored water starts drying, and ultimately leaves start shriveling.

Keeping it in constant shade will result in leaves dropping and in the end, you will be left with only leafless branches. Now if you are someone living in an apartment and falling short of bright space, you can keep it indoors but make sure you keep Jade plant in sunlight every few days. This will provide all the necessary sunlight to the Jade plant for photosynthesis.

Pruning: Pruning is done for a variety of reasons. From removing dead branches of plants to keeping your plant young, pruning has immense benefits. The main plant shoot doesn't allow new young branches to develop. Pruning can encourage the growth of new branches and keeps up the young appearance of your jade plant.

Propagation: Jade plant can be easily just with the branch. Cut a slightly mature branch of the jade plant with the help of a clean pruner or sharp scissors. Insert this cutting in the sand or coco-peat. Keep it in a shaded area until new growth is visible. Within a few weeks, you will observe new growth emerging from your baby jade plant cutting.
Repotting: Jade plant as such doesn't require frequent re-potting. The root of the jade plant develops slowly. So avoid frequent repotting and let it grow wild.

Fertilizers: As mentioned above, the Jade plant is an undemanding plant. This said it does not have any specific fertilizer requirements. Ideally, fertilizer should be added just before the growing season of the Jade plant commences. You can add any fertilizer of your trusted brand or use regularly in your garden.
