7 Powerful rooting hormone you can make at home

Have you ever brought cuttings of your favorite garden plant, planted them in your nursery only to see them slowly wilting to death?

Have you tried the fun experiment of propagating your favorite plant through cutting, but have had just a little success?

In layman's terms, propagating means making duplicate plants out of a branch or stem cuttings from a mother plant. It is a great way to multiply a plant, especially if it’s a rare variety or very much dear to you or if you wanna gift some plants to your friends and neighbors.

The simplest way of cloning a plant is just pinching a small branch or stem cutting and inserting it into the soil. But the survival rate of such cutting is usually low. Rooting hormone helps your baby cutting develop strong roots quicker instead of struggling to survive.  Rooting hormones can be natural or synthetic chemicals and contain Indole butyric acid (IBA). IBA is the natural plant auxin or hormone responsible for the stimulation or the formation of roots.

In this post, we will discuss 7 powerful homemade rooting hormones or rooting stimulants as some people like to call it, which can be used for #growing, #propagating, #multiplying cuttings of your favorite plant Or can help you clone your plant easily. You can conjure up even more powerful rooting hormone by mixing two or more of these substances as these are natural and so harmless :)

The long and short of it is this: Rooting hormones will decrease the chance that your plant wilts and dies slowly and will considerably increase the chances that your baby cutting will thrive.
So why not try them? So without further ado, let's increase the chance of multiplication of cuttings with the 7 powerful homemade rooting hormones:

1) Saliva:  You read it right folks. Nothing primitive and basic then saliva. It has been used as a rooting hormone since time immemorable due to its antifungal and antibacterial properties. The logic is to avoid rotting of the cutting due to bacterial/ fungal infection. This can simply be achieved by dipping the cutting into the saliva and inserting it into the soil. (As everyone says, something is better than nothing).

2)Apple cider vinegar:  Another widely known kitchen product yet one of the most underrated, Apple cider vinegar is another powerful root stimulant. When used in smaller doses, can help produce roots in cuttings. Add 10 drops in a cup of water and mix well. Do not use more than the mentioned quantity as it may have a detrimental effect on root production. Just dip the desired cutting into the prepared solution. Let it absorb the solution for a few seconds and then insert it into the soil.
Fun Fact: Vinegar is a powerful weedicide (Weedkiller).

3)Cinnamon powder: Cinnamon powder is a universal ingredient and is easily available in the kitchen. It is widely known for its anti-bacterial and antifungal properties that can almost double your cloning rate.
Firstly, prepare a fine powder of the cinnamon stick. Wet your cuttings a bit with normal water and then dip the wet cutting into the cinnamon powder. Make sure the bottom inch or two of the cuttings are well coated with powder. Finally, insert this cutting into the soil.

4)Willow Bark: Who doesn't like mighty willow tree? But did you know that willow tree bark can be used as a root stimulant for propagating cuttings? Willow tree bark contains two active ingredients: Salicin and Indole butyric acid. Salicin is similar to aspirin while IBA is a powerful rooting hormone as discussed earlier. If you are among the lucky few who has a willow tree in the vicinity, grab a growing branch and prepare willow tea. Dip the cuttings into the willow tea, which is full of IBA. Insert the treated cuttings into the soil and enjoy the magic.

5) Honey: Another magic kitchen staple famous for its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties which ensure that our baby cuttings are safe from any microbial attack and do not rot away. Just try to use pure honey if possible and also avoid direct application of honey onto the cuttings. ( This may attract bugs and insects ).
Add 1 teaspoon of honey in 2 cups of water and mix well. Dip the cuttings into the mixture and then insert them into the potting mix.

6) Aloe vera gel: Fresh aloe vera gel has many beneficial uses. It contains salicylic acid and many other beneficial enzymes, minerals and amino acids. Extract the fresh gel from an aloe leaf and dip the cuttings into them. Now transfer them into the soil and voila!!! Your work is done here.

7) Combination of powders: To increase the effects of these rooting hormones and double your success rate, you can formulate a new rooting hormone using a combination of the above-mentioned ingredients: e.g. Cinnamon powder+ honey or Willow tea + honey.
